How does Community Choice work?
In 2018, 18 Community Choice programs are serving nearly 3 million customer accounts across California.
They offer a power tool for communities to take charge of their energy future.
And they work Very Well!

Community Choice lets customers choose between electricity suppliers. Some customers like cheaper or more green electricity. Others support this tool for its powerful climate benefits. See this KPBS explanation of how it works.
- The community makes the choice! Whether operated by a city or a publicly-accountable non-profit, elected representatives of the people are the ones who oversee the program.
- The utility still delivers the electricity. It maintains the wires and sends the bills. If your power goes out, you still call the utility. All that stays the same.
- The Community Choice program controls its rates and programs. Full Net Energy Metering? We can restore it. A Feed-in Tariff? The CCA can do it. Incentives for demand response, net zero energy, EV charging - a CCA can offer all these, and others that make sense for its community.
