Net Energy Metering: Down to the Wire

Action Opportunity

SDED follows Net Energy Metering (NEM) because this policy has anchored California's renewable energy marketplace since 1996.  Two years ago, however, SB 327 mandated replacement of the current NEM regime with a "successor tariff", also called "NEM2.0 (see background here.)  SB 327 required, among other things, the CPUC to issue a Proposed Decision on NEM2.0 by December 31, 2015.
As of late November, the Proposed Decision has not been issued.  The Commission meets twice more before year-end; the Decision could be released at any time.  A 30-day comment period will follow, at minimum, before the Commission votes on the Final Order.  Until the Final Decision, there is still time to defend Net Metering!
NEM2.0 will shape a great deal in California's renewable energy markets from now on.  Whether the "hit" to the solar industry is huge, immediate and devastating, or survivable in the context of other impacts (rate tiers, new peak hours, ITC step down) all hinges on the Final Decision.  Sierra Club, VoteSolar, CalSEIA, 350.org, all have organized rallies and developed comment materials (box at right).  Tailor these to your community, your businesses and send to the Commission - any time before the CPUC votes on the Final Order, comments can still be submitted.  DO IT!  Thank You!!
